INTERNSHIP OFFICE BACKGROUND:

The internship will be within the UNDP-China Team for South-South Cooperation, which specifically focuses on engaging with China in its cooperation with countries and partners outside of China. Over the past decades, China has been increasingly engaging in international development and cooperating as part of China's wider approach to South-South cooperation - increasingly, this cooperation also involves multilateral development agencies. Here, UNDP has been at the forefront since signing an MoU with China in 2010 to expand the on-going domestic engagement of UNDP in China to also increasingly work together with Chinese institutions as part of China's global engagement. As a result, there are growing interests among the general public, research institutes, and media outlets to better understand and get involved in issues related China’s development cooperation, including the role of multilateral organisations in development.

In order to stimulate knowledge exchange and support increasing communication on UNDP's mission and where possible the cooperation between UNDP and China towards the Chinese constituency in China, towards international partner representation in China as well as towards audiences in partner countries, UNDP China office is hiring an intern to join SSCGD team.

Specifically, the intern will assist in the design and implementation of communication and advocacy strategies, assist in creating external outreach contents (press releases, social media, articles etc.) and activities (events and forums, etc.), and work in close liaison with other teams within the UNDP China office, with local Chinese media outlets, and other Chinese stakeholders.

Other key stakeholders are traditional donors as well as other UN-agencies who - each in their own way - welcome interaction with UNDP-Beijing on engagement with the Chinese government on SSC, The intern will also have the opportunity to assist in organising related events and researching and drafting related first versions of meeting agenda or concept notes.




  • Produce quality content for international and Chinese audience & work in close liaison with Chinese media outlets, and other Chinese and non-Chinese stakeholders;

  • Contribute to the development and implementation of targeted social media campaigns for South-South cooperation, including drafting Mandarin Chinese and English communications materials to showcase UNDP’s work to Chinese and international audiences; (correspondences, website write-ups, social media, success stories, exposure articles, etc.);

  • Draft posts on social media channels (Facebook, Twitter, Weibo WeChat, etc.), and human-centred stories and exposure page;

  • Support UNDP China, its partners, and other key Chinese stakeholders to organize events such as conferences, workshops, ceremonies, and note-taking when requested; actively participate in various events;

  • Contribute to developing visual communications products such as PowerPoint presentations and other visual media including infographics;

  • Assist with administrative tasks related to the management of research projects, trilateral cooperation projects, and communications projects;

  • Assist with the organization of meetings, workshops and seminars, and note-taking when requested; actively participate in various events;

  • Assist in organising related traditional donors’ and/or intra-UN-agencies’ events and researching and drafting related first versions of meeting agenda’s or concept notes;

  • Others: Support other/ad hoc activities as seen as relevant and needed.




Education:

Candidates must meet one of the following educational requirements:

 

  • ?   Currently in the final year of a Bachelor’s degree; or

  • ?   Currently enrolled in a Master’s degree; or

  • ?   Have graduated no longer than 1 year ago from a master’s degree or equivalent studies.

 

Field of study: International development, Economics, Journalism, Communications, Translation/Interpretation, English, Creative writing, International relations, Design or Marketing or equivalent.

 

Competencies:

  • ?   Publication-standard English and Mandarin Chinese drafting and editing skills;

  • ?   Experience with creating content for social media channels is desired;

  • ?   Translation (English – Mandarin and Mandarin – English) skill is an asset

  • ?   Good coordination and organizational skills: ability to manage multiple projects, address fluctuating priorities and tight deadline;

  • ?   Interest and motivation in working in an international organization;

  • ?   Good analytical skills in gathering and consolidating data and research for practical implementation;

  • ?   The outgoing and initiative-taking person with a goal-oriented mindset;

  • ?   Communicates effectively when working in teams and independently;

  • ?   Good in organizing and structuring various tasks and responsibilities;

  • ?   Displays cultural, gender, religion, race, nationality and age sensitivity and adaptability;

  • ?   Responds positively to feedback and differing points of view;

  • ?   Consistently approaches work with energy and a positive, constructive attitude;

 

 




Required Skills and Experience:

IT skills:

  • Knowledge and a proficient user of Microsoft Office productivity tools;

  • Some familiarity with graphic design software or web-based tools in an asset

Language skills:

  •  English and Mandarin Chinese required;

  •  Knowledge of other UN languages is an advantage;

V. INTERNSHIP CONDITIONS

 

·       Interns must provide proof of enrolment in health insurance plan and medical certificate of good health prior to starting the internship. Any cost arising from accidents and illness incurred during an internship assignment will be the responsibility of the intern.

·       The stipend will be paid monthly. Interns will have 1.5 days of leave per month.

·       Interns are responsible for obtaining necessary visas and arranging travel to and from the duty station where the internship will be performed; Cost and arrangement for travel, visas, passports, accommodations and living expenses are the responsibility of the nominating institution, related institution or government, which may provide the required financial assistance to its students; or the intern.

·       Intern must not apply for or be appointed to a position that should be encumbered by a staff number during the period of their internship. Interns are expected to fulfil the terms of their internships. Therefore, the internship must not be foreshortened for the purposes of allowing an intern to apply for a position

·       Interns are not staff members and may not represent UNDP in any official capacity.
